Nurses week is almost here

If you’re a nurse reading this…

you already know this job isn’t just a job.

It’s long shifts.

It’s missed breaks.

It’s being there for people on their hardest days.

It’s pouring into everyone else, sometimes before you’ve had a second to think about yourself.

And if I’m being honest…

for a long time, I thought that’s just how it had to be.

That taking care of myself came after everything else.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

You can’t keep showing up for everyone else

if you’re constantly running on empty.

And I’m not talking about bubble baths and face masks.

I’m talking about the basics that actually keep you going—

physically, mentally, and emotionally.

1. Prioritizing protein

No, you don’t need a perfectly prepped meal every day.

But having something on hand— protein bars, Greek yogurt, a smoothie

It’s the difference between feeling stable during your shift vs. crashing halfway through.

2. Moving your body with intention

You don’t need 6–7 workouts a week.

For most of my clients (and honestly, myself too),

3–4 strength workouts per week is more than enough.

3. Sleep

I used to sacrifice sleep for workouts.

Now? It’s non-negotiable.

Your recovery, your hormones, your hunger cues—

they all depend on it.

Especially with early mornings or flipping schedules.

4. Hydration

Most nurses are running on coffee + whatever water they can grab.

Aim for consistency instead of perfection:

Bring your water bottle. Refill it when you can.

It sounds simple, but it changes how you feel on shift.

5. Letting go of the all-or-nothing mindset

This is the biggest one.

You don’t need to “start over” every week.

You don’t need to be perfect to make progress.

The goal is consistency over time.
